Calgary's Cooking puts groups of individuals who meet twice a month to plan and then cook healthy, nutritious and budget-friendly meals. Calgary's Cooking is two easy steps.
Step 1 : Planning meeting
The members gather to plan a menu around advertised specials in major food store flyers. Each participant pays for his or her share of the food. This is calculated by dividing the total cost of the food by the number of portions required.
Step 2 : Cooking session
The members get together at a designated kitchen to prepare and cook the recipes. At the end of the cook each member has several meals to take home and freeze for later, thus furthering healthy eating habits. Members share recipes, nutritional knowledge as they cook and everyone gains from each other’s enthusiasm. Some participants learn new recipes and are introduced to new foods contributing to a more balanced diet.

Through a Calgary’s Cooking Kitchen, you pay between $2.50 and $4.00 per portion! That is less money per portion than most frozen meals you can buy at the grocery store, they are more nutritious and contain less sodium.
Why does it matter?
In this day and age of busy families, working parents, or empty nesters, Calgary's Cooking helps participants not worry about what's for dinner and, spend less time preparing meals on a daily basis. It also helps Calgarians stretch their food budgets and gives them the ability to put healthy food on the table.
How does it work?
Individuals can form their own groups, or join existing kitchens. Many of these groups meet in kitchens located in Churches or Community Halls around the city; some groups meet at the Community Kitchen headquarters in North East Calgary. Everyone is expected to participate in the menu selection, preparation, and cooking; the only requirement is an interest in healthy food. Calgary’s Cooking staff supports all new kitchens by attending the first three planning sessions and cooks.
Calgary's Cooking has two different kitchen models, the Regular Kitchen and the Mini Kitchen.
The Regular Kitchen has 6-10 people in the group. These groups usually cook for their families and end up going home with 14-16 different meals. The cooking time is usually a full day.
The Mini Kitchen has 4-6 participants in the group. These groups are geared to seniors, single people, single parents and, empty nesters. Mini kitchen participants go home with 4-6 meals and the cooking time is usually 3- 4 hours.
